Travel Channel Names SPI as One of America’s Top Beaches for Families in 2006

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS is the tropical southernmost part of the world's longest barrier reef island on the Gulf of Mexico at the Texas / Mexico border. Located 2 miles off the southern tip of Texas, South Padre Island is connected to the mainland by the Queen Isabella Causeway. The article states that South Padre Island "remains pleasant when the rest of the state is at its coldest. This beach is for the value-conscious traveler … there are scores of moderately priced and budget condo resorts and accommodations, including well-known chains and one-of-a-kind hotels with more charm than class."

The South Padre Island's restaurants, bars, shops, movie theater and water sports were also noted. The Travel Channel also recognized South Padre Island in 2000 and 2001 as one of America's Best Beaches.
